Meeting with the Alliance for Rights and Freedoms (ARF) on Tuesday, President Iliana Iotova said she will "take note" of their opinion that Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) Deputy Governor Andrey Gurov is suitable for caretaker prime minister. The meeting was held during Iotova's consultations with the parliamentary groups concerning the future caretaker prime minister.

The President commented: "These consultations are an opportunity for me to hear everyone and to assess who, from the very short list provided to me, would be best able to handle the upcoming challenges, and above all, to conduct the elections. I will make my decision in accordance with the constitutional provisions, my powers, and the interests of Bulgaria."

At the end of January, Iliana Iotova met with all potential caretaker prime ministers identified according to the rules in the Constitution. In addition to Gurov, four other potential nominees expressed readiness to take up the post: Deputy Ombudsman Maria Filipova, Bulgarian National Audit Office President Dimitar Glavchev, and Glavchev's deputies Margarita Nikolova and Silvia Kadreva.

"I will nominate one of those who said 'yes', although if I were to make my own choice, I might have reached a different decision," Iotova added.

Before the constitutional amendments of December 2023, the president had no restrictions in choosing a caretaker prime minister.

Iotova thanked ARF for attending the meeting. "For me, this is an expression of the will to work together — all institutions — to guide the country through the severe parliamentary, and not only parliamentary, crisis. We must face the growing number of challenges before us, especially in these anxious days. This situation has caused an exceptionally large social trauma," the President said.
