site.btaOver 14 Tonnes of Undeclared Vegetables Seized at Lesovo Border Checkpoint
Bulgarian customs officers found a total of 14,200 kg of undeclared vegetables in a lorry travelling from Turkiye to Ukraine during an inspection at the Lesovo checkpoint on the border with Turkiye on January 30, the Customs Agency said.
The driver, a Turkish national, presented documents showing the cargo consisted of tangerines and pomegranates. Following a thorough inspection, customs officers found that over 14 tonnes of cucumbers and tomatoes were being smuggled.
The driver was issued a statement of administrative violation under the Customs Act. The offender paid the imposed fine of EUR 14,000.
A few days earlier, customs officers at the Lesovo Border Checkpoint intercepted 711,000 cigarettes (35,550 packs) with a declared value of over EUR 100,000. A pre-trial investigation was opened under the supervision of the Yambol District Prosecution Office.
