Outgoing Minister of Labour and Social Policy, Borislav Gutsanov, will open on Monday the fully renovated nursing home in the village of Glavinitsa, Pazardzhik Municipality, the Ministry announced. The facility has been refurbished and equipped with new furniture and is one of twelve social services already renovated with funding from the National Recovery and Sustainability Plan.

According to the Ministry, ensuring decent living conditions for the elderly is one of Gutsanov's priorities. He has started to tackle illegal accommodation facilities where people were living in conditions that endangered their lives and health. The press release went on to say that alongside closing them down, the minister is actively working to open new, state-funded homes offering decent living conditions and care.

Inspections of homes for the elderly are ongoing, with 509 inspections having been carried out so far. At the end of June 2025, Gutsanov announced during a hearing of the Committee on Demographic Policy, Children, and Family on actions and measures to prevent the provision of social services by unlicensed providers.

Currently, Bulgaria has 82 state-owned homes for the elderly, which are provided to municipalities. 81 of these are being renovated with funds from the Recovery and Sustainability Plan, while one home is being renovated by the respective municipality. These homes have a capacity of 5,600 people, but just under 5,000 currently live there. The renovation work is expected to be completed by April 30, 2026.
