The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) issued a yellow code for low temperatures and snowfall on Monday for almost the entire country, the NIMH said on its official website.

The warning is for sub-zero daytime temperatures and significant snowfall. It is in force for nearly all regions of Bulgaria, with the exception of Sofia City, Pernik, Kyustendil and Blagoevgrad.

According to NIMH, the synoptic situation will remain complicated on Sunday. Snowfall will be widespread, with temporarily intense and significant precipitation expected in places around the Rhodopes, the Central Balkan region and Ludogorie. A new snow cover will form, and combined with a northeasterly wind, conditions will be favourable for blizzards and snowdrifts.

In the afternoon, precipitation will gradually weaken and stop, while cloud cover over southwestern Bulgaria will break up and decrease. In northern Bulgaria, temperatures will show little diurnal variation, ranging between -7C and -4C. In the southern half of the country, minimum temperatures will be between -3C and -2C, while maximum temperatures will range from -3C to -1C in the Upper Thracian Plain, reaching up to 8C in Sandanski. In Sofia, lows will be around -4C and highs about -2C.
