The outgoing Council of Ministers adopted on Wednesday a decision approving Bulgaria’s accession to the EU GOVSATCOM initiative and the establishment of a competent GOVSATCOM authority (CGA) within the Ministry of Innovation and Growth, with the Ministry of e-Government acting as a supporting institution.
The initiative aims to ensure the long-term availability of reliable, secure and cost-effective governmental satellite communications services for EU and national public authorities managing security-critical missions and infrastructure. Participation in GOVSATCOM will support public services in areas such as crisis management, border and maritime surveillance, as well as the management of critical infrastructure, by providing communication capabilities even in areas without terrestrial coverage or in the event of communication outages.
Joining the European initiative and, respectively, establishing a CGA will help Bulgaria become better positioned within key European and international communication networks and will strengthen its role as a key participant in the European ecosystem for secure communications and space technologies, with the ability to actively take part in EU strategic initiatives and contribute to strengthening the Union’s overall security and resilience.
