With temperatures plunging across the country, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) and the Sofia Zoo are calling on people to help wild birds survive the harsh winter conditions. Both are urging people to place bird food - seeds, grains, and unsalted nuts - in gardens, balconies, and public green spaces, especially during freezing spells when natural sources are scarce.

"Sustained cold makes it difficult for birds to find enough food," BSPB said in a social media post. "Even small efforts by individuals can make a real difference in helping them get through these extreme conditions."

The Sofia Zoo added that clean water should also be provided if possible, as many natural water sources are frozen.

Volunteers and animal lovers looking for guidance can contact local wildlife organizations for tips on safe bird feeding practices.

Authorities remind the public to avoid bread or salty foods, which can harm birds, and to place food where it won’t attract pests or pose hazards to people.
