GERB leader Boyko Borissov expressed strong support for the European People’s Party (EPP)’s position that the European Union (EU) must urgently establish genuine European defence capabilities in close cooperation with NATO by 2030. He made this statement during his conversation with Manfred Weber, president of the European People's Party (EPP), as announced on Borissov's Facebook page on Friday. Borissov is in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, to attend the EPP Summit that is taking place there on Friday and Saturday.

According to Borissov, EU's competitiveness must be maximized, its dependence reduced and bureaucracy cut back.

"Over the past year, Bulgaria has made significant economic progress. We achieved a gross domestic product of EUR 113 billion, and the country's economic growth is over 3%, placing us among the top five EU countries. Thanks to the hard work of the Zhelyazkov cabinet, over EUR 63 billion in European aid has reached Bulgarian companies, municipalities and citizens. We have also attracted record-breaking investments, including strategic projects in the defence industry," Borissov told Weber.

He also noted that Bulgaria completed its European integration by becoming part of the eurozone and Schengen during the term of the Zhelyazkov government. Borissov assured Weber that Bulgaria is responsibly fulfilling its role as an external border of the EU in protecting the security of the entire Union.
