A total of 5,293 babies weighing under 2,500 g and 481 weighing under 1,500 g were born in Bulgaria in 2024, the Health Ministry said Monday on its Facebook page. November 17 marks World Prematurity Day, a global moment to raise awareness of the challenges and impact of preterm birth. Those births account for 11-12% of all newborns in the country. Premature babies require specialized medical care.

Premature infants need various life-saving interventions immediately after birth. This requires not only modern equipment but also consumables that are often depleted quickly, the Our Premature Children foundation said on its website.
