Silistra Municipality is starting with the implementation of a project to build a municipal composting plant for biodegradable waste and a municipal system for separate collection and recycling of biodegradable waste, Silistra Mayor Aleksandar Sabanov said on Wednesday.

The project envisages the construction of a municipal composting plant for biowaste, as well as the delivery and commissioning of the necessary technical equipment. A municipal system for separate collection will also be built and an information campaign will be organized to raise public awareness about sustainable waste management. The main goals of the project are to reduce the amount of landfilled municipal waste and achieve full separate collection of biodegradable waste in Silistra Municipality, the mayor said.

Sabanov emphasized that a grant agreement has been signed between the Environment and Water Ministry and Silistra Municipality, with the project budget being just over BGN 3.4 million.  "I hope that everything will be completed by the end of 2027, so that we can landfill less waste and extend the life of cell number 4 of the Regional Municipal Waste Landfill. In the coming years, as no programme provides funds for the construction of new landfill cells," he said, adding that the Municipality will have to conduct an information campaign on separate waste collection.

The mayor also recalled that in 2010 the construction of a separation plant was started, which was supposed to be near the Regional Municipal Waste Landfill in Silistra. However, the project was stopped and legal cases are still ongoing between the Municipality and the contractor, he pointed out.
