There will be early elections in Serbia, stated Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, quoted by the country’s media. “We will definitely have elections before the constitutional and legal deadline,” Vučić said Friday during an event related to EXPO 2027 – the international exhibition to be held from May 15 to August 15, 2027, in Belgrade.

“For six months they lied that they don’t want elections, that they are not involved in politics, for six months they made false demands, and in the end, we realized they are only interested in politics,” Vučić said about the protesters. He added that they illegally blocked roads and hindered citizens from moving freely.
“Ultimately, the protesters turned our faculties and universities into dens and pigsties,” Vučić commented regarding the months-long student blockades.

The Serbian President did not specify when exactly the early elections will be held. The last parliamentary elections in Serbia were held in December of 2023. The Skupština (Serbia's Parliament) has a four-year term, while new elections can be called by the President.

Serbia has been plagued by student-led protests, sparked by the deaths of 16 people in the November 1, 2024 Novi Sad railway station incident, which call for political accountability and early elections, posing the biggest challenge yet to President Vucic’s leadership.
