President Iliana Iotova awarded Argentina’s Ambassador to Bulgaria, Alejandro Zothner Meyer, the Madara Horseman First Class order on Monday. The decoration recognized his contribution to Bulgaria’s bilateral relations with Argentina.
During his two years in Bulgaria, Zothner Meyer did a great deal to expand the political dialogue between the two countries and to develop their trade and economic ties, Iotova said at the ceremony at the President’s administration. He also did much to advance cultural and educational links and won many friends in Bulgaria, while expanding Argentina’s influence and importance among Bulgarian citizens, she added. Iotova noted that the two countries will soon mark 95 years since the start of their official diplomatic relations.
She thanked Zothner Meyer for his contribution to the Bulgarian Antarctic expeditions and noted that cooperation with Argentina is developing well and has a strong future.
Iotova also thanked the ambassador for managing to invite and bring to Bulgaria the governor of Argentina’s Chaco Province, where Bulgarians have lived since the end of the 19th century. She also pointed out that during Zothner Meyer’s term, an agreement on mutual cooperation and friendship was signed between Pleven Municipality and a municipality in Argentina. Iotova congratulated the ambassador on his work and said she was sure he would remain among Bulgaria’s best friends.
Zothner Meyer thanked Iotova for the high honour bestowed on him, as well as for the warmth shown to him and his country. He described bilateral relations between Bulgaria and Argentina as rich and fruitful. “I will be Bulgaria’s ambassador in Argentina, count on me,” he said.
The two countries share a strategic vision for Antarctica, Zothner Meyer also said, adding that Bulgaria’s achievements in the Antarctic expeditions are remarkable. “In trade terms, Bulgaria is a key partner for us. The methods applied in agriculture, which support higher production levels, also support our bilateral relations, together with the pride in the results achieved by Bulgarian products,” he added. “We see Bulgaria as a gateway to Central and Eastern Europe for our products and production,” Zothner Meyer said.
Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and diplomats also attended the ceremony.
