site.btaBulgaria Wins Grand Prix at Slovak Folk Radio Competition

Bulgaria won the Grand Prix and three awards at the international folk radio recordings competition Grand Prix Svetozar Strachina, the Bulgarian Embassy in Slovakia said on its Facebook page.

The award ceremony of the 12th edition of the competition took place on April 16 in Bratislava, featuring 14 countries with a total of 31 recordings.

The Grand Prix was awarded to the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Music Orchestra for the recording Na Charshiyata, composed and conducted by Dimitar Hristov. The award was received by Bulgarian Ambassador Snezhana Yoveva-Dimitrova.

Bulgaria also received an award in the Stylized Folklore category for the same recording. An additional distinction for best performance was awarded to the Bulgarian National Radio recording Havziya Lezhi Bolna, with the jury recognizing the performance of Roman Romanov.

Awards in the other categories went to participants from Latvia, Ukraine and Sweden. A Latvian Radio recording was honoured in the Authentic Folklore category, while a production by the Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne Ukraine won in the World Music category, the statement said.

The international jury was chaired by Slovak ethnomusicologist Prof Bernard Garaj.

The Embassy noted that the competition is held every two years and showcases various forms of folk music, from authentic performances to contemporary interpretations.
