Shumen Municipality has attracted the most funds from external financing in Shumen Region, Shumen Deputy Mayor Desislava Petrova said during a local conference held here on Wednesday. The event was part of BTA’s Europe on Balkans: Cohesion Skills project.

She pointed out that the municipality's budget for 2025 is BGN 190 million, to which BGN 90 million are added from European funds. "During the 2014-2020 programming period, Shumen Municipality implemented two key projects related to the infrastructure in education, which will cover 172 students from small settlements (...)", Petrova noted, adding that in this way, children will be able to study in a comfortable environment.

Petrova pointed out that they are currently working on projects in different directions, with delays in contracts from the Managing Authority. They have also developed projects for financing under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, with five buildings in Shumen to be renovated under the plan, including the building of the Shumen Municipality and the building of the Regional Library. The aim of these projects is to achieve indicators related to the reduction of harmful emissions, greenhouse effects and to achieve energy efficiency of buildings.

The total value of the projects is BGN 13 million, with the own participation of the Shumen Municipality amounting to nearly BGN 2 million.

"Currently, we have applied for a project under the Education programme, related to the integration of ethnic groups of children, namely Bulgarians, Roma and children of Turkish origin. The goal of the project is for them to work together, interact with each other, and improve their learning engagement," Petrova said. The specific goal of the project is the construction of STEM rooms and intercultural competence.

She also pointed out that for the 2014-2020 programming period, Shumen Municipality has implemented 13 projects worth a total of BGN 38 million, with the grant amounting to BGN 35 million.

BTA's Europe on Balkans: Cohesion Skills project aims to raise public awareness and foster open dialogue about cohesion policy, local achievements, and the implementation of the EU's policy priorities.
