Bulgarian Ambassador to Belgrade Petko Doykov said here on Tuesday that Belgrade holds a special place int he life of Bulgarian revolutionary Lyuben Karavelov.
Doykov's remarks came at a time when the Bulgarian News Agency, with the assistance of the Bulgarian Embassy in the Serbian capital, unveiled a commemorative plaque in Karavelov's memory on the facade of the Bulgarian Consulate in Belgrade. The Ambassador recalled that on this day, April 29, 1872, Lyuben Karavelov was elected Chairman of the Bulgarian Central Revolutionary Committee.
"Belgrade occupies a special place in Lyuben Karavelov's life—he lived and worked here for several years, engaging in extensive public and journalistic activity. In Belgrade, he found an environment where he could freely express his ideas and actively collaborated with other fighters for national liberation. During his stay in the Serbian capital, Karavelov deepened his understanding of European political processes and strengthened his belief that education and freedom go hand in hand. It was here that he also met his wife. Today, we pay tribute not only to a great Bulgarian, but also highlight the ties between Bulgaria and Serbia in our shared struggle for freedom and enlightenment. I congratulate the leadership of the Bulgarian News Agency on the initiative to install a commemorative plaque in honor of this great Bulgarian."
Ambassador Doykov also noted the role of the Bulgarian Embassy in Belgrade in taking the necessary steps with the host country’s official institutions to obtain permission for the plaque in memory of Lyuben Karavelov to be placed at 36 Svetogorska Street, where the Bulgarian Consulate is located in the Serbian capital.
