Romania marked National Minorities Day on December 18, with the Bulgarian community also taking part in the celebrations.
An ensemble called Horo from the Bulgarian Joy association in the village of Baleni Sarbi, Romania, performed on the stage of the Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum in Bucharest.
Photographs from the exhibition “Community. Multiculturalism. Development” were displayed in the corridors of the Romanian Parliament. The exhibition features the work of photographers who promote national minorities, with a particular focus on the Banat Bulgarians. Photos showcased the beauty of traditional Bulgarian and Banat Bulgarian folk costumes.
Former Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu received an award, presented for the first time this year, in recognition of his excellent cooperation with and support for the Parliamentary Group of National Minorities.
“December 18 is an appropriate moment to remind everyone that Romania is our best homeland and to thank all Romanians for this,” Georgi Nakov, a member of parliament representing the Bulgarian minority, wrote on his official Facebook page.
In 1992, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities. Since 2017, December 18 has been observed as a national holiday in Romania. The country officially recognizes 20 national minorities, including a Bulgarian one.
