Today it is more important not to simply reproduce historical facts, but to look for the reasons and lessons from the past, to think about why historical events happened and what led to them, Vratsa Regional Governor Nikolay Nikolov said during a conference dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising at the BTA National Press Club in Vratsa on Thursday.

He drew a parallel between the time of the April Uprising and the present, raising the question of whether today's generations are worthy of the freedom won by our ancestors. "We have always had this psychology to wait for someone to come to free us, to save us. However, the April Uprising is not only about heroism and self-sacrifice. It is, above all, about the idea and the organization," Nikolov stressed, emphasizing that it is precisely the organization, achieved in extremely difficult conditions, that is the strongest lesson from that time. He expressed a critical attitude towards the passivity of modern society and the replacement of real civic participation with activity on social networks. "Today we are very active online, but we are less present at events that help us understand what happened and how to react in the future," he said.

Similar forums will also be organized at BTA press clubs in the centres of the remaining revolutionary districts of the April Uprising - Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, and Panagyurishte. The conferences are part of the joint initiative of BTA, Bulgarian National Television, and Bulgarian National Radio, titled 14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe. The initiative aims to commemorate anniversaries of Bulgarian historical events that have had an impact on shared European history.

The 14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe programme includes anniversaries through 2032, when 1,400 years will be marked since the founding of Old Great Bulgaria.
