Customs officers at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint on the border with Turkey seized 4,490.67 grammes of jewellery worth a total of BGN 404,160, the Customs Agency said on Thursday.
A bus with foreign plates travelling from Turkey to Romania was selected for customs control on Wednesday. The inspection revealed 25 packages concealed in a special cache in the dashboard, containing rings, pendants, bracelets, chains, necklaces and earrings made of 14-carat gold.
The jewellery was seized and pre-trial proceedings on the case were launched.
The driver of the bus, a Turkish national, has been released on bail of BGN 5,000 and is forbidden to leave the territory of Bulgaria.
