Aleksandar Dimitrov was appointed as the new head coach of the national football team, Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) President Georgi Ivanov said after a meeting of the Executive Committee at the headquarters on Wednesday. The former coach of the under-21 youth team replaced Ilian Iliev, who was released after 3-0 defeats to Spain and Georgia.
Dimitrov, who signed a two-year contract, will make his debut against Turkiye in a World Cup qualifier on October 11 in Sofia.
Dimitrov took over the U21 team in 2018 and remained at the helm until his appointment to the senior team. Before taking charge of Bulgaria U21, Dimitrov worked as a coach in the U17 and U19 teams, as well as at Beroe (Stara Zagora) and Lokomotiv (Gorna Oryahovitsa).
