On September 14, 1905, the first firefighters' congress in Bulgaria was held. Within the event in Sofia, fire commanders established a professional association, the first professional organization of firefighters in the country. They also decided to publish the Firefighting magazine as its official body.
The congress, which continued until September 18, 1905, was initiated by fire chiefs from across the country with significant experience and professional training. Seventeen fire commanders and ten commanders of volunteer brigades participated.
On September 13, 1995, the Council of Ministers adopted a decision declaring September 14 Day of the Interior Ministry's Directorate General of Fire Safety and Civil Protection, a professional holiday of its employees.
Traditionally, the holiday coincides with a nationwide Fire Safety Week.
