The European Parliament on Thursday rejected a motion of no confidence in the European Commission (EC) under the presidency of Ursula von der Leyen. The motion was supported by 175 MEPs, while 360 voted against and 18 abstained, out of a total of 553 votes cast.
The no-confidence motion was tabled by a Romanian MEP from the European Conservatives and Reformists group. During the debate on Monday, the EC President told MEPs that such actions were backed by the enemies of the EU, specifically naming Russia.
This is the first vote against a commission under von der Leyen's leadership. The vote is related to the fact that the EC President did not provide access to the messages exchanged with a representative of the vaccine manufacturer Pfizer for the supply of over a billion doses for several billion EUR during the COVID pandemic.
