Romania's Natural Gas Imports Up by 34.5% in Q1 2024

Romania's natural gas imports increased by 34.5% in the first quarter of 2024 year-on-year, according to data from Romania's National Institute of Statistics.

Domestic production of natural gas for the first quarter of 2024 amounted to 2.266 million tonnes of oil equivalent, up by 1.2% from the first quarter of 2023 (+22,300 tonnes of oil equivalent).

According to the estimates of the National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis, natural gas production is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 3.6% between 2023 and 2026.

In the latest energy balance forecast, the National Institute of Statistics projected a 2.3% increase in gas production in 2024 (to 7.935 million tonnes of oil equivalent), a 2.7% increase in 2025 (to 8.15 million tonnes of oil equivalent) and a 3.8% increase in 2026 (to 8.455 million tonnes of oil equivalent).

In terms of natural gas imports, a quantity of 1.755 million tonnes of oil equivalent (minus 2.1%) is forecast for 2025 and 1.725 million tonnes of oil equivalent (minus 1.8%) for 2026.
