An evening dedicated to writer Alek Popov was held at the Bulgarian Cultural Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday. Representatives of the Bulgarian Embassy in Skopje, publishers, writers and friends of the writer in the country, and representatives of the Bulgarian community gathered in the hall, surrounded by Alek Popov's books published in North Macedonia.

"We wanted to talk about Alek Popov, about what he left in our minds, which will mark the path of Bulgarian literature, and young people will read. He is important not only for Bulgarian literature, because he is among the writers whose books are among the most translated," Antonia Veleva, director of the Bulgarian Cultural Information Centre in Skopje, said.

"Alek Popov was a universal mockingbird, with a mildly ironic sneer over everything. After November 10, 1989, we all expected that there would be writers who would open drawers of dissident literature; it didn't happen until his generation of writers emerged. His stories were interesting, in those turbulent times, and his style was guided by the principle that the absurd cannot grow old. He went on a mission to London, wrote Mission London, and developed as an extraordinary writer. He loved Macedonia, he had many friends in North Macedonia, he loved to come here and have intellectual fun and think about how things should be in the future. And he will remain a bright, European, honest mind", Bulgaria's Ambassador to North Macedonia Angel Angelov said.
