The Kozloduy Nuclear Powerplant EAD will be able to contract and receive supplies from Russian companies for the purpose of the planned annual maintenance of the sixth power unit. Following a letter received from the NPP and on the proposal of the Energy Minister, the government decided Wednesday to grant a derogation from the bans on restrictive measures in view of Russia's actions against Ukraine. The Regulation provides for the possibility for the competent authorities of the Member States to authorize exemptions from the prohibitions in place where this is necessary for the operation, maintenance, reprocessing and safety of civil nuclear facilities.

Currently the supply is of internal reactor detector units and asynchronous motors, and related supplies and services. The derogation granted will also allow the supply of a tubular electroheater unit for the volume compensator, current transformers as well as specific spare parts for the check valve and other spare parts.

Kozloduy NPP EAD is the owner of the only nuclear power plant in Bulgaria, which is the largest electricity producer in the country. It provides more than one third of the annual national electricity production and is a key factor for Bulgarian energy security. The plant was built to a Soviet design and much of its systems and equipment are of Russian origin.

The supplies of goods and services listed in Wednesday's Cabinet decision are related to the planned annual refurbishment of the sixth power unit of the plant.
