There is no economic and political logic for Bulgaria and Romania to be out of Schengen, President Rumen Radev said at a joint briefing with Croatian head of State Zoran Milanovic on Thursday. Milanovic is on an official visit to Bulgaria.

Radev noted that Bulgaria had met all the technical criteria back in 2011 as this fact was accepted by the European Commission.  “Keeping Bulgaria out of Schengen with any momentary whims and momentary political arguments undermines EU’s normative foundation, undermines the EU decision-making mechanisms,“ Radev further said. This is a loss not only for the economies of the two countries, a humiliation for the citizens of both countries, but also a loss for Europe, Radev argued.

“At a time when we are talking about military mobility, about greater security, about fighting the economic crisis and inflation in Europe, there is no logic to prevent the free movement of people, goods, services and capital, which is at the heart of the union,” the President pointed out.

Radev underlined that in recent months Bulgaria has had two inspections by the European Commission and in both of them the country has shown excellent result.

He expressed belief that “if the parliament adopts the important laws, there will be no obstacles and arguments to stop our country on the way to Schengen accession”.
