President Iliana Iotova tasked Andrey Gurov with proposing a lineup for a caretaker cabinet. The two met on Thursday after President Iotova nominated the Bulgarian National Bank Deputy Governor as caretaker prime minister.
On Wednesday, Iotova said Gurov will be her choice of a caretaker PM. Iotova will meet Gurov at the building of the President's administration later on Thursday.
Under the Bulgarian National Bank Act, if the Governor or a Deputy Governor has expressly agreed to be appointed caretaker prime minister, they must submit their resignation.
"Expectations for you are very high. We, the citizens of Bulgaria, want elections for the National Assembly that are honest, transparent, well prepared, and properly conducted," the President said, adding that she expects of Andrey Gurov to safeguard every single vote.
"We expect the elections to be held in accordance with the rules, the Constitution, and the laws of Bulgaria, in order to guarantee a stable state with a rule of law, a secure and predictable country," the President also said.
She noted that the consultations with the parliamentary groups have underscored a shared understanding of the most pressing challenges facing the country, which require urgent solutions. She emphasized that their effective resolution will depend on the shared political responsibility of both the executive branch and parliament.
"Fair elections are possible when a caretaker government does not interference in the political arena, remains sufficiently neutral, and operates only within the powers granted to it by the Constitution," Gurov said, after his meeting with Iotova in January.
