As of 2025, data from the National Health Information System (NHIS) show that 302,450 cases of malignant neoplasms have been registered in Bulgaria, with breast cancer accounting for the largest share – 51,179 cases, the Health Ministry said in a Facebook post. The first two national screening campaigns are set to begin in 2026 and will run through 2030.
The cervical cancer screening campaign will include testing for human papillomavirus (HPV). Women aged 25 to 65 will be provided with self-sampling kits for home use, regardless of their health insurance status. Cervical cancer ranks second in incidence among women aged 15 to 44 and is the 12th leading cause of cancer-related deaths.
A screening campaign will also be launched for colorectal cancer, which is the most common malignant disease of the gastrointestinal tract and the third most prevalent cancer worldwide. When detected early, the five-year survival rate reaches 90%, while late diagnosis significantly reduces survival chances.
The first deliveries of the necessary medical supplies are expected within two months, and implementation of the screening programmes will begin in the second quarter of 2026.
Under the investment for modernization of healthcare facilities within the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, 14 hospitals across the country will be equipped with modern radiotherapy and oncological diagnostic equipment, which will improve access to treatment nationwide, the Health Ministry added.
