At least nine people were killed and 25 injured when a passenger bus overturned in Antalya, in the southwestern part of Turkiye, local media reported, quoting the provincial governor.

According to the reports, the passengers were Turkish citizens, travelling on a regular line from Tekirdag, Northwestern Turkiye, to Antalya. The injured were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

According to Antalya Governor Hulusi Sahin, the crash occurred on Sunday morning as there was fog in the area. The bus, carrying 34 passengers, lost control on a slippery curve and overturned into a ravine.

"Unfortunately, the consequences are very serious, nine of our citizens died, 25 were injured, some in serious condition. According to initial data, the accident was probably due to high speed. The pavement was wet, there was also fog, the section does not allow high speed, but it was probably not taken into account," the governor added.

Teams from the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), emergency response units, including 112 Emergency Health Services, fire brigade, and gendarmerie teams, arrived at the scene following the incident report.

An investigation into the crash has started, Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said.

Antalya is a popular tourist destination on the Mediterranean, which has been hit by heavy rain in recent days.
