The MRF - New Beginning parliamentary group held a series of meetings related to the group's bill on maximum price markups of essential products, the group's press service reported on Friday.
The bill aims to help the poorest citizens, who are faced with unreasonably high food prices, to be relieved during the transition period of changing the national currency.
The meeting was hosted by MRF - New Beginning Deputy Floor Leaders Iskra Mihaylova-Koparova, Jordan Tzonev, Stanislav Anastassov, and by Atidzhe Alieva-Veli, who is a member of the parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, Food and Forestry. They met with representatives of associations from the agricultural sector and of chambers of commerce of Bulgaria's partner countries.
Earlier this week, the MRF - New Beginning press service said that the bill to be tabled in Parliament aims to tighten control over prices and markups on basic products until the end of 2026 due to the transition to the common European currency and to protect end consumers from speculation and bad commercial practices. The bill provides for the adoption by the Council of Ministers of the so-called consumer basket, which includes basic food products such as flour, bread, milk, sugar, rice, etc., and the introduction of a 20% cap on the markup on goods in the basket between the producer or importer and end consumers.
