Malena Zamfirova has finished fifth in the parallel slalom event at the Snowboard Alpine World Cup in Davos, Switzerland.

The 16-year-old Bulgarian, who placed sixth in the qualification round, began the elimination phase with a victory over Germany’s Mathilda Scheid in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Zamfirova lost by 0.22 seconds to Elisa Caffont of Italy. Caffont went on to win the event, edging out Czechia's Zuzana Maderova in a photo finish in the big final. In the small final, Japan’s Tsubaki Miki defeated Ukraine’s Annamari Dancha.

In the men’s competition, Bulgarian snowboarders Tervel Zamfirov, Alexander Krashniak, and Radoslav Yankov finished ninth, tenth, and eleventh, respectively. Yankov came closest to reaching the top eight, holding a 0.07-second advantage over Austria’s Fabian Obmann at the intermediate checkpoint, but ultimately finished 0.24 seconds behind him.

Austria’s Arvid Auner claimed victory in the men’s event, overtaking Italy’s Gabriel Messner in the final and ending Italy’s streak of four consecutive wins in the opening World Cup races of the season. In the small final, Italy’s Aaron March defeated Switzerland’s Dario Caviezel.

The next Alpine Snowboard World Cup races are scheduled for January 10 in Scuol, Switzerland, where a parallel giant slalom will take place.
