The port in the Greek city of Volos, Thessaly, has been under "siege" by land and sea since the morning on Wednesday, after protesting Greek farmers blocked its entrance with tractors, while fishermen supporting the protest surrounded it from the sea, Greek media  outlets reported.

Television footage shows dozens of fishing boats with smoke flares "storming" the port in movie-like scenes.

State broadcaster ERT reports that riot police units have been deployed at the port entrance.

The protesters remain at their blockade positions along much of Greece’s main road arteries.

Speaking on Action 24 TV, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said that the cabinet is ready for talks with the farmers as soon as they appoint a delegation for such a meeting.
