Experts from the Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) and the National Revenue Agency (NRA) held an information meeting in Peshtera on Wednesday. The event was part of the National Information Campaign for the Introduction of the Euro in Bulgaria.
The meeting was attended by senior inspectors from the CPC Gergana Merdzhanova and Boris Stankov, as well as the director of the NRA office in Pazardzhik Petko Petkov. During the meeting experts explained to residents of Peshtera the main stages and deadlines in the process of adopting the euro as the national currency from January 1, 2026.
Throughout the month of January 2026, payments can be made in leva and euro, but merchants are obliged to return change in euro only, except in the event of a lack of cash, the experts noted. All funds in banks will be automatically converted to euro free of charge, and the currency conversion will be carried out by applying the official exchange rate. In small settlements, where there are no bank branches, the exchange will be carried out at post offices, which will be free of charge for the first six months of 2026, the experts stressed.
The CPC will carefully monitor price labels in stores after October 8, when the grace period for double price indication expires. All necessary measures have been taken so that from January 1, businesses and citizens can use the services of the NRA without hindrance, Petkov emphasized. The income that will be declared for taxes for 2025 should be submitted in leva, Petkov pointed out, adding that any corrections in the declarations should also be in leva.
