Speaking at a discussion on the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union here on Thursday, Deputy Foreign Minister Nikolay Pavlov said that as a full member of the eurozone, Bulgaria will participate in the decisions and policies of the European Central Bank and the financial institutions of the monetary union. He stated that this participation will guarantee Bulgaria's financial stability and prosperity and will contribute to the overall European financial project.

Pavlov said: "The start of the Cypriot Presidency coincides with a significant milestone for our country—Bulgaria's transition to the single European currency. This is our strategic choice, which confirms our country's place at the heart of a united and strong Europe." He added: "In the changed global political environment, strengthening cooperation and introducing measures in the field of defence and security at EU level are emerging as common goals. We support the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency in the field of security and defence. We welcome the Presidency's vision for creating a strong European defence industry, which is an essential factor in ensuring strategic needs and is of vital importance for security in Europe."

The deputy Foreign Minister said that Bulgaria more efforts are needed to boost investment in the European defence industry.

Pavlov emphasized that addressing the Russian aggression against Ukraine should remain a top priority. He said that support for finding a diplomatic solution by preserving Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity is of paramount importance.

On January 1, Cyprus took over the six-month presidency of the Council of the EU for the second time with the intention of promoting changes aimed at European independence under the motto 'An Autonomous Union – Open to the World'. The presidency kicks off against a backdrop of acute geopolitical turmoil and unpredictability. It is recognized that Europe must cooperate with its partners where possible, while acting independently where necessary. According to Cyprus, the EU must work towards autonomy in defence, energy, and trade, competitiveness, the transition to a clean economy, digitization, and social cohesion.

The discussion was organized by PanEuropa Bulgaria in partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Bulgaria, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the Diplomatic Institute at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Association of the Officers in the Reserve Atlantic.
