The European Commission (EC) will deliver a statement next Wednesday to the European Parliament on the threats to aviation and maritime navigation posed by GPS signal jamming, according to the agenda of next week’s plenary session in Strasbourg.
The EC and MEPs are expected to discuss the urgent need to strengthen resilience against such disruptions.
The debate comes days after EC spokespersons confirmed a GPS signal disruption during the landing of EC President Ursula von der Leyen’s aircraft at Plovdiv Airport. The plane landed safely, but the incident sparked speculation about possible Russian involvement. Earlier on Wednesday, EC Deputy Chief Spokesperson Arianna Podesta said that the institution did not suspect targeted actions, noting that signal interference has been observed in recent years at multiple points along the EU’s eastern borders.
