The Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Agricultural Academy presented Bulgaria's innovation and scientific potential in agriculture during a thematic event entitled Necessities of Life: Food, Clothing and Shelter Week scheduled to take place between June 5 and 16, the Ministry reported on Tuesday. The event is part of Expo 2025 Osaka in Japan. The presentation is focused on sustainable agriculture, plant breeding and the development of high value-added foods, including space foods.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Lozana Vasileva who spoke at the opening of the event said that while Bulgaria is a small country, it does boast significant achievements in areas such as plant breeding and space food production.

She pointed out that the importance of agriculture is growing with its global contribution to protecting the environment, providing employment, developing rural areas and ensuring food security.

Chair of the Agricultural Academy Prof. Violeta Bozhanova gave a presentation on the latest plant selections of the Maritsa Vegetable Crops Research Institute at the Agricultural Academy. She stated that these selections aim to preserve tradition while also providing opportunities for high productivity and resistance to plant diseases through DNA genotyping, complete phenotyping, metabolomics analyses.

Recent advances related to accelerating the plant breeding process through innovative remote sensing and machine learning methodology for field phenotyping were also demonstrated.

The Director of the AgroBioInstitute at the Agricultural Academy Prof. Ivan Atanassov presented Bulgarian space foods with proven success in real missions.

Bioactive products such as hygroscopic powder extracted by biomass and waste utilization technology from essential oil crops were also presented.

During the first month of the Expo, the Bulgarian pavilion welcomed over 50,000 visitors. On May 18, Bulgaria marked its National Day at Expo 2025. President Rumen Radev was one of the participants at the event.

On May 18, the April issue of BTA’s arts and culture magazine LIK, dedicated to Bulgaria and the World Expos and published in Bulgarian, English and Japanese, was presented in the Bulgarian pavilion, Sofia and in 40 BTA national press clubs across Bulgaria and abroad.

World Expo 2025 in Osaka brings together 165 countries and regions and nine international organizations occupying about 180 pavilions. Under the theme Designing Future Society for Our Lives, the fair offers interactive exhibitions, demonstrations of state-of-the-art technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics, and presentations of sustainable and innovative solutions in architecture, energy and healthcare, including smart-city showcases. Opened in April, the forum will run until October and is expected to draw almost 30 million visitors.
