Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev left for Washington, D.C. to take part in the Munich Leaders Meeting that is taking place between May 5 and 7, the Government press service reported on Monday. The forum organized by the Munich Security Conference will discuss security and defence, energy security, economy and trade, technology and innovation, with Bulgaria's position being that open dialogue and a strong transatlantic partnership are crucial to address the current global challenges.
Bulgaria is ready to be a key factor as an active, reliable and predictable partner in strengthening the relationship between Europe and the US, the Foreign Ministry said.
US President Donald Trump's proposed land grabs mean that the US is no longer seen as an anchor of stability, but rather as a risk against which we need to protect ourselves, the organizers of the conference said in a report, which was published in early 2025. Since taking office, Trump has talked about the possibility of acquiring Greenland and the Panama Canal and suggested Canada could be the 51st US state.
