Bulgaria is running for re-election to the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the 2027–30 term, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Dimitar Nedyalkov said during the World Telecommunication Development Conference in Baku, as quoted by his ministry in a press release on Wednesday. The event has been organized by the ITU, which Bulgaria has been a member of since 1880. The World Conference provides a platform for the adoption of global strategies for technological development and digital transformation policies, and for the development of cooperation to overcome the digital divide.
At the event, Nedyalkov presented the Ministry of Transport and Communications' digital connectivity policy and projects and made clear that the objective of the largest investment in high-speed internet is to facilitate broader access to digital services and technological innovations.
During the conference, the Deputy Minister held talks with ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin and her deputy Tomas Lamanauskas. According to the press release, bilateral meetings were also held to discuss Bulgaria’s ITU Council candidacy with the delegations of the United States, the United Kingdom, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Japan, France, Jordan, Benin, Samoa, Rwanda, Bahrain and Serbia.
