Information meetings, part of the national euro information campaign were held on Wednesday in Valchi Dol, Kaolinovo, Sredets, Roman, and Chernoochene.
Experts explained the main stages and deadlines for adopting the euro, the rules for dual price labeling, as well as issues related to tax and social security declarations, bank accounts, and interest rates.
Inspectors from the Commission for Consumer Protection (CPC) and the National Revenue Agency (NRA) will begin mass inspections of merchants starting Thursday, said Lora Georgieva from NRA’s-Varna office in Valchi Dol. The inspections will focus on whether all price tags in retail outlets and restaurants are displayed in both leva and euros, and whether cash registers show the total amount in both currencies, Georgieva clarified.
Deadlines for exchange, filing complaints, and labelling were among the topics discussed at the euro information session in Chernoochene. During the forum, it was noted that Chernoochene does not have a bank branch, so the exchange of leva into euros will take place at post office stations. For larger amounts, a prior request will be required.
Fines of up to BGN 50,000 will be imposed by the Commission for Consumer Protection (CPC) for unjustified price increases, said Daniela Kostova from the CPC at the informational event in Sredets.
At the meeting in Roman, merchants were interested in when and how they would receive the necessary amounts in euros from banks to operate with starting January 1st. Citizens asked how they would exchange the leva they currently hold. According to the information presented, merchants will be able to obtain the required banknotes and coins starting in December, after submitting a request to their servicing bank.
