Podkrepa Confederation of Labour supports the proposed poverty line in principle, but not the methodology used to calculate it, said the union’s secretary Valeri Apostolov during a meeting of the National Council for Tripartite Cooperation on Tuesday.

The meeting of the Government, unions and employers was held to discuss the 2026 poverty-line ordinance.

Apostolov stated that the poverty line should be linked to the cost of living to ensure adequate protection for vulnerable groups. He emphasized that the current methodology is based on data from two years ago, does not reflect inflation, and shows relative rather than real poverty.

He pointed out that social policies built on a poverty line that is inadequate lead to inadequacies in policies aimed at protecting vulnerable and low-income groups.
