All renovations of the 81 nursing homes currently underway must be completed by June 2026, Labour and Social Policy Minister Borislav Gutsanov said in Varna, where he took part in celebrations for the city’s holiday. He said that so far, 12 illegal residential institutions for the elderly have been shut down across Bulgaria and over 400 people have been relocated from them.
Gutsanov added that the largest renovation programme for nursing homes since 1990 is currently in progress. According to him, the funding has been secured through the Recovery and Resilience Plan. In parallel with this project, 254 new services are being launched nationwide, primarily aimed at people with specific needs.
An inspection of 116 buildings (former schools, nurseries, and healthcare facilities) is underway across the country, with the aim of identifying which ones can be converted into nursing homes, the minister said. He noted that these buildings were proposed by municipal mayors. Gutsanov stated that it is likely around 10 new institutions will be established, and he believes it is entirely realistic for them to be ready by the middle of next year.
