After the National Assembly Committee on Budget and Finance approved draft amendments to the Introduction of the Euro in the Republic of Bulgaria Act on second reading on Tuesday, Nikolay Valkanov, Executive Director of the Association for Modern Trade, told journalists that the business sector still harbours concerns regarding the proposed changes.

“Certainly, consumer interests must come first, but some of the business community’s concerns were not addressed at today’s meeting, and we hope these will be taken into account during the plenary session,” he said.

Valkanov clarified that these concerns mainly relate to the scale of the sanctions, which he described as disproportionate to the violations and potentially threatening the survival of businesses.

“The extensive list of goods that must be reported is another issue, linked to the topic of competition protection,” he added. According to him, the business sector believes that any measures the Council of Ministers may take should require prior parliamentary approval, rather than being implemented without parliamentary involvement.
