“Bulgaria has proven—not just in words but through concrete actions—that it is a guarantor of the security of energy networks not only within its own borders but also throughout the region,” said Minister of Energy Zhecho Stankov at a briefing held at the headquarters of the Electricity System Operator, in response to recent reports of power outages in neighboring countries.
“In the early hours of today [Sunday], the regional grid, including those of neighboring countries, faced serious challenges—mainly due to high voltage levels caused by low consumption and an excess of reactive power,” Minister Stankov explained. “On Bulgarian territory, we have 90% of the region’s reactive power compensation capacity, and we successfully managed the processes in order to support our neighboring countries as well.”
He noted that North Macedonia experienced partial grid outages, and the Bulgarian system is currently assisting in restoring their networks.
“Our system remains stable because we have both generating and compensating capacities within the country,” the Minister emphasized.
