In 2022, revenues from environmental taxes stood at BGN 8,009.31 million, 106.9% more than in 2021 (BGN 3,869.93 million), the National Statistical Institute (NSI) said on Tuesday.

Energy taxes accounted for 94.2% (BGN 7,546.39 million) of the total environmental tax revenues in 2022. There was a significant increase in energy taxes in 2022 due to the inclusion of a new energy tax, Contributions to the Electricity System Security Fund, which stood at BGN 3,503.01 million, the NSI said.

Next in importance were BGN 2,378 million in excise taxes on fuels (coal, petroleum products, natural gas and electricity), used both for stationary purposes and for transport, and BGN 1,629.31 million in revenues from greenhouse gas emissions.

At BGN 412 million, transport taxes accounted for 5.1% of the total environmental tax revenues for 2022. Taxes on pollution and resources accounted for the smallest share at 0.6% (BGN 50.84 million).

In 2022, the business sector paid BGN 6,727 million in environmental taxes, 84% of the total revenues from environmental taxes. Within the business sector, services paid BGN 4,271 million (53.3% of the total revenues from environmental taxes), industry paid BGN 2,324 million (29%) and agriculture, forestry and fishing paid BGN 131.78 million (1.6%).

Households paid BGN 1,153.24 million in environmental taxes in 2022, 14.4% of the total revenues from those taxes. The non-resident sector paid BGN 129 million, 1.6% of all environmental taxes.
