site.btaNew Poll Shows Romanians Divided on Role of EU in Security and Defence
Romanians are divided over the role of the European Union in security and defence according to a new study by the INSCOP polling agency, published online on Monday.
The survey included 1,100 Romanians and was conducted via telephone interviews between January 12 and 15, 2026.
Of those surveyed, 43.2% prefer Member States to retain their current responsibilities for protecting their citizens in the event of military aggression. Meanwhile, 41.7% of those surveyed want the EU to take on more responsibilities, mainly comprising supporters of two parties in Romania's ruling coalition - the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Save Romania Union (USR) - as well as young people under 30. Some 15.1% of respondents did not answer the question.
"Romania is in a state of strategic ambivalence: people feel that they live in a more dangerous world but have not yet developed a clear model of who is ultimately the real guarantor of their security," commented INSCOP director Remus Stefureac.
