The outgoing Council of Ministers approved a draft agreement between Bulgaria and Turkiye on resolving issues related to border crossings between the two countries and on opening a new border crossing, Kapitan Andreevo – Kapikule North, the Government’s press centre said on Wednesday.

The draft agreement provides that, within a timeframe to be additionally agreed between their competent authorities, the contracting parties will build and open a new joint border checkpoint located in the area of Kapitan Andreevo village, Svilengrad Municipality, on the territory of Bulgaria, and Kapikule village, Edirne Province, on the territory of Turkiye, north of the existing border crossing.

The draft agreement also provides for the establishment of a Joint Expert Commission, which will specify the main technical characteristics of the road connections, the location of the routes, their points of intersection with the border, the type of adjacent checkpoints in terms of traffic, working hours and number of lanes, the site of the new border checkpoint and its technical parameters, the operating regime, infrastructure, types of cargo and passengers, legal and practical issues related to the construction of the new border crossing, as well as all matters of mutual interest related to the implementation of the agreement for all border crossings between the two countries.
