Greek authorities are using drones to monitor whether citizens have free access to beaches, public broadcaster ERT reported on Friday.

According to data from the Greek Ministry of Economy and Finance, more than 1,500 inspections have been carried out since the beginning of the season at over 300 beaches and 450 companies operating in coastal areas.

The inspections are aimed at ensuring compliance with the legal framework for the protection of the coastline and beaches and guaranteeing citizens’ free access to them.

The monitoring system now uses drones and modern technological tools that allow violations to be registered immediately.

Citizens can submit reports through the MyCoast mobile application, which are then checked by the competent authorities. The largest number of reports is submitted through the application.

Compared with previous years, fewer violations by beach establishments obstructing free access to beaches have been recorded this season, the data show.
