The artist and theologian Julia Stankova will present 13 watercolours dedicated to biblical themes, in which the leading motif is communion — the connection between Christ and humanity. The exhibition, titled Communion, will be open to the public at the Paris Gallery in Sofia from October 6 to 25, as well as online via the gallery's website.
Nadia Pavlova, gallery owner and theologian, said: "The paintings are all based on biblical themes, and the connecting thread between them is the constant communication between Jesus Christ and humanity. This is evident when the drowning Apostle Peter is firmly grasped by Christ's hand. In this grasp lies our belief that we are not alone, that we will be rescued and not sink. In another painting, we see the deceased daughter of Jairus, whose hand is gently held by Jesus, who resurrects her. In a third painting, Lazarus and the Lord Jesus Christ reach out to each other, so that life may continue and death may be defeated."
Stankova has held numerous exhibitions dedicated to exploring contemporary Christian art. Her work is based on Byzantine iconography and shows her current interpretation of the biblical text. Pavlova said that Stankova's stories translate biblical parables and events through images, bringing the viewers closer to the heavenly and the eternal.
