Bulgaria’s top high school students in informatics earned two gold and two silver medals at the world’s most prestigious programming competition – the 37th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), held in Sucre, Bolivia from July 27 to August 3, the Natural Sciences Olympic Teams Association (NSOTA) reported. A total of 330 participants from 86 countries competed in the event.
Vesselin Markovich of the Varna Mathematics High School (12th grade) finished among the top 10 globally.
“This year’s success marks the best Bulgarian performance in the history of the International Olympiad in Informatics,” NSOTA’s statement reads. “In the unofficial team ranking, Bulgaria placed fourth in the world, ahead of countries such as the United States and Japan.”
The gold medals were awarded to Vesselin Markovich and Aleksandar Gatev (12th grade, Sofia High School of Mathematics), while the silver medals went to Andrey Stefanov (10th grade, Private High School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) and Boris Mihov (12th grade, SMG). The team was coached by Iliyan Yordanov (Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences) and Viktor Kozhuharov.
To date, Bulgarian students have earned a total of 131 medals in the history of the Olympiad: 29 gold, 57 silver, and 45 bronze.
