Writers Union of Bulgaria will present its 101st annual literary awards. Eighteen writers and three public figures will be honored on May 23 at the Sredets Gallery of the Ministry of Culture, the Union told BTA on Friday.

The prizes are awarded in several categories - for poetry, short prose, novels, humor and satire, children's literature, journalism and essays, literary criticism, memoirs and documentaries. The winners were already decided after a public discussion on May 13.

On May 23 will be announced the winners of the national literary awards Geo Kranzov, Bozhidar Bozhilov and Georgi Bratanov.

The annual literary awards were initiated by prof. Ivan D. Shishmanov in 1923 and the awarding of them did not stop even during the Second World War, the Union said. No political and social turmoil affected this tradition, which is still alive today, the Union added. Hundreds of books in different genres are received every year for the review of book production in the previous year.
