Bulgarian long-distance swimmer Tsanko Tsankov has launched on Saturday an attempt to set a world record for 24-hour nonstop swimming in the Danube River.
Tsankov, a world champion and record holder in ice swimming who has completed five of the world’s seven toughest open-water marathons, began his swim near the Bononia Estate winery in the village of Koshava, Vidin Municipality. He is expected to cover about 135 kilometers to the town of Oryahovo, where he is due to finish around 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 24.
According to his manager, Nikolay Iliev, Tsankov is not allowed to touch or board a boat or use any aids during the attempt. The record bid is held in partnership with the Bulgarian Swimming Federation, with referee Velislav Tsekov overseeing the effort from the lead boat.
The event is supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Bulgarian Sports Totalizator, the “Sport in Bulgaria” Foundation, and the municipalities of Vidin and Oryahovo.
