English writer and historian Mercia MacDermott died aged 95. She was born in Plymouth on April 7, 1927.

MacDermott wrote books about revolutionaries Vasil Levski, Gotse Delchev and Yane Sandanski and an English-language history of Bulgaria, historian Todor Chobanov wrote on Facebook.

MacDermott visited and lived in Bulgaria from 1957 to 1989. Between 1963 and 1964, and then between 1973 and 1979, she was a teacher at Sofia's English Language Secondary School.

Her last published book is Once Upon a Time in Bulgaria.

Two years ago MacDermott was awarded a citation for outstanding service to Sofia, Assoc. Prof. Chobanov said.

Rumyana Koneva, director of Wittgenstein House in Vienna, told BTA that she passed on March 28. She cited the writer's daughter.
